Hi! Can you believe it’s been a year since I joined Puck? My private email, Line Sheet, launched just a few weeks later. And what a year it has been. Sometimes, I still can’t believe this is my job, but then I get a reply from you and am reminded how lucky I am to be covering the fashion industry at the most exciting place around.
As I promised all those months ago, I’ve endeavored to bring you a high-low mix from inside the fashion industry—something you won’t find anywhere else. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading these missives as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them. It was fun to break some big stories, too, from Kylie Jenner launching a fast-fashion line, to my sit down with Alexander Wang in his first serious interview since his quasi-cancellation. Then there’s the whole Phoebe Philo saga. And the Arnaults. And the Pinaults. So much!
With that, some of my favorite storylines from this past year include:
-
The trials and tribulations of legacy fashion media, but especially the drama unfolding inside Condé Nast [The End of the Edwardian Age, Roger Dodger, Slouching Toward One World Trade, Life and Legacy Media]
-
The rise of LVMH as the industry’s dominant player—and how its greatest rival is fighting back [Scenes from the Tiffany-LVMH Marriage, Inside LVMH’s Pharrell Fantasy, Kering in the Age of LVMH]
-
The epic, ongoing dissemination of online luxury [So Farfetch Away, Matches on Fire and the Great Fashion Correction of ‘23, It Came From Carlos Place]
- Designer musical chairs [The Chanel Spell, Demna, Alessandro & Other Fashion Week Infatuations]
-
A different way of seeing Fashion Week [Down and Out in Paris, Remembrance of Brands Past]
-
Deals, deals, deals! [The Olsens, the Future of The Row & Those Fundraising Murmurs…, Guess Who’s Buying Rag & Bone]
- The crazy, mixed-up worlds of fashion and Hollywood [The Red Carpet Shadow Wars]
-
The desperation of outsiders making their way in [Life Imitates ‘Yellowstone’, The Naadam Guy, the Death of Entireworld & LVMH Dreams, Voices Over]
- Plus, my seven predictions for 2024, featuring some of our favorite topics… [Ozempic Mysteries, Estée Succession & The CAA-ification of Fashion]
Anyway, this is a (characteristically) long-winded invite for you to stick around with me and my partner Rachel Strugatz, who joined me in February as Puck’s beauty correspondent. I’m sure you read her latest on Glossier, but if not, get on that.
There is so much more coming from Puck, and me, and Rachel—and, of course, from Line Sheet in the coming months. I have a pretty good feeling that you want to stick around, just make sure your credit card is active (lol). And no matter what, I would love to hear from you: thoughts, suggestions, tips, complaints, I want them all! Cheers to you, and this very fun adventure we are on together.
Until next time,
Lauren
