Last week, OpenAI announced its latest model family with a notable caveat: It would launch as a limited preview for a small group of government-vetted partners. As Ian reports, the staggered rollout is the result of the Trump administration’s suddenly very hands-on approach to A.I. regulation—a stark pivot from the pre-Mythos halcyon days, when A.I. czar David Sacks was still in the White House, spreading the gospel of deregulation.

Plenty of A.I. researchers are happy that the administration is finally taking cybersecurity threats seriously. But for many industry observers, the real problem is that it seems to be making up rules in real time—and that the “improvised pseudo-regulatory regime,” as one source called it, is creating serious strategic risks. As this person warned, if the administration doesn’t quickly abandon its approach in favor of a transparent legislative framework within a few weeks, thousands of potential customers in allied countries could instead turn toward Chinese models, whose developers have been laser-focused on catching up to their U.S. counterparts.
