Now that Pieter Mulier has taken his final bow at Alaïa, reality is setting in. A few months from now, Mulier will begin his tenure at Versace, where he’ll reckon with three ghosts: Gianni Versace, the house’s late namesake; Donatella Versace, his still very present sister; and Dario Vitale, whose brief chapter at the house will go down as the most impactful single-collection designer tenure in history. But the expectation is that Mulier will rise above all that. In many ways, his assignment at Alaïa was tougher, and he navigated it with aplomb. Instead, the bigger question is Versace itself, and how it will be integrated into the ultra-efficient Prada Group, which acquired the struggling business late last year.
