As recently as April, Sen. Marsha Blackburn seemed like a shoo-in for Tennessee’s Republican gubernatorial primary, polling 50 points above her closest challenger, Rep. John Rose. But after a string of bad headlines (including her refusal to debate) and campaign missteps (like stonewalling a reporter, as she does in D.C.), Blackburn’s lead is shrinking. The dynamic has sparked comparisons to Sen. Michael Bennet, who shockingly lost Colorado’s Democratic gubernatorial primary last month. It all got worse today after the Chattanooga Times Free Press, which features the state’s most conservative opinion page, endorsed Rose—writing that voters shouldn’t reward Blackburn with the governor’s mansion “just because she’s been around a long time.”
