In a world that worships starchitects, Rick Cook is adamantly down to earth. I mean that literally. When I visited him recently at the CookFox office on the 17th floor of the tiered 1921 Fisk Tire Building, designed by Carrère & Hastings near Columbus Circle in Manhattan, a gauntlet of terrariums by the artist Paula Hayes greeted me as I entered the premises—which look nothing like any office I’ve ever worked in and yet Cook believes are models for the workplace of the future.
