The annual European Fine Art Foundation fair—better known as TEFAF and referred to by the in-crowd as simply “Maastricht”—has an unfortunate art world distinction: Many people who have never attended (including myself, at least until this week) think they know the fair, but they don’t really know the fair at all. The eight-day event, held on the Dutch panhandle (Europe’s answer to flyover country) is a mecca of the art and antiques market that’s often overlooked by collectors outside Europe.
