Speaker Mike Johnson helped convince Trump to abandon his much-derided “anti-weaponization fund,” but he’s having less success persuading the president to drop his support for Bill Pulte to serve as acting director of national intelligence. Pulte, of course, is despised by Democrats for using his perch at the Federal Housing Finance Agency to investigate Trump’s enemies—and almost equally distrusted by many Republicans who note he has zero national security experience. Democratic votes are crucial this time to extend Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which expires on Friday, and their support hinges on Trump nominating someone else.
