Glossier’s declining relevance in fragrance has been especially painful given the years-long growth streak in the category—and the fact that other brands have found enormous success at a similarly approachable price (around $100). Photo: Courtesy of Glossier

A few months ago, photos of a blue Glossier perfume bottle started circulating online, leading many to speculate about the brand’s next fragrance. (Someone said it looked like Listerine, and now I can see nothing else.) Certain brands have started to “leak” samples as part of a launch strategy, but Glossier is far too precious about its marketing to tolerate that sort of tackiness. Now, more details have finally arrived: Following a haphazard expansion over the past two years, during which the company mindlessly launched three perfumes in five months, Glossier will introduce a new fragrance in the coming weeks called Soie. Yes, another pretentious French name, and it’s pronounced “swah.”
