President Joe Biden’s closely watched press conference on Thursday night at the NATO Summit was a Rorschach test for Democrats. For Biden’s defenders, it was a masterclass in foreign policy that showed he could actually perform under the klieg lights after his debate debacle, staving off calls to drop out of the presidential race from members of his own party. For critics who want Biden to step aside as his campaign flatlines against Donald Trump, the president was his usual confounding self—rambling, undermining his message with predictable gaffes, and showing off none of the kinetic energy needed to resuscitate his campaign. Either way, it did little to resolve the intraparty tensions. “Are we in hell, or purgatory?” one veteran Democrat strategist texted me this morning.
